Having a water borehole drilled undoubtedly brings with it several great benefits. In fact, we’ve written a whole blog on the topic – you can find it here www.hydrotechdrilling.co.zw! However, what many people fail to realize is that installing a water well isn’t a one-size-fits-all process. There are various factors that affect a project’s cost, and the team here at Hydrotech Drilling, who provide various geotechnical services across Zimbabwe wanted to look at what makes up well-drilling costs.
1. Drilling Specifications
It would not seem well to start with the drilling of the well itself. Both the depth and the diameter of the well affect how costly your project is going to be. Understandably, the deeper you drill the well, or the wider you have it, the more expensive your well will be. These factors unquestionably inform well-drilling costs more than any other. Likewise, the type of casing used to line the well will have an effect on the price. PVC casings are cheaper than steel tubing but less durable. If your well is going to be getting serious usage, then it’s worth investing in materials that are going to last.
2. Location
For domestic projects, the closer the well you’re installing to your home, the more inexpensive the project will be. Conversely, the greater the distance from the property, the longer the waterline required and therefore the more expensive the project.
3. Water Quality Testing
Once the borehole drilling has taken place, you need to guarantee that the water itself is drinkable. After all, it would be a real kick in the teeth to have your shiny, new well installed, only to develop health problems because of it further down the line! High nitrate levels in borehole water are especially dangerous to the airways of children and the elderly.
Not only this, but untested water well can lead to stomach bugs, nausea, and diarrhea. The price of contamination testing depends on how accurate you want to go. You can order a home testing kit or have a laboratory analysis carried out. Laboratory testing is obviously more expensive and can cost hundreds of dollars.
4. Transport
Something which clients often forget to take into consideration is the cost of transport. For a geotechnical drilling company to transport their rig equipment is no small task, and can often end up costing hundreds of dollars. On the flip side of this, if the job is local, then you’re not going to be spending much at all on transportation. Thus, again going to show how individual each and every project is, and why the well-drilling cost can vary so much.
5. Maintenance
It’s also worth remembering that even though they’re fairly self-contained, your private well requires annual maintenance to keep it all in working order. This helps ensure the water hasn’t become stagnant, that the pumping system still works well and that water is flowing as it should be, at an appropriate pressure.
Ultimately, several different factors dictate a water well’s drilling cost. As we’ve established, however, factors such as price and materials tend to be the main drivers in determining the financials of an installation job.
